
Prof. Amos Mwakigonja
Amos Mwakigonja is a Consultant Anatomical Pathologist and Professor of Pathology with long practical experience in Surgical Pathology, Cytology and Autopsy & Forensic Pathology. He has also taught various public and private Universities inside and outside Tanzania for 21 years now. Furthermore, he possess expertise in research including non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and communicable diseases especially Cancers (cancer research) and Infectious Diseases including Viruses (HIV/AIDS, HHV-8, EBV, HPV, COVID-19), Bacterial infections (e.g. TB & H.pyroli), Parasites (Malaria, Toxoplasmosis, Filariasis, Schistosomiasis) and other opportunistic infections. He is interested in Placental and Perinatal Pathology, and also Nephropathology and Nephorology. He retains strong interest in Experimental Pathology including Natural Products Development research. He is interested in Medical Education and Educational Scholarship. Laboratory Methods, Management and Quality Systems as well as fatal and non-fatal injury surveillance systems. Amos has elucidated the magnitude of lymphomas in Tanzania including the sociodemographic pattern, viral (HIV, HHV6, EBV & HHV8) association, diagnosis, classification, ploidy status, proliferation index and other factors; probably more extensively than in other Tanzanian reports. He has also published extensively on the clinical presentation, histopathology, pathogenesis and histogenesis of Kaposi Sarcoma including viral (HIV & HHV-8) association as well as proliferation index.
His recent research has also focused on tissue pathology for female cancers, breast and cervical cancers, among women in Tanzania with more focus on breast cancer presentation, magnitude, histopathology, immunohistochemical classification including a special interest on receptor status (ER, PR and HER2), triple negative breast cancer (TNBC), the androgen receptor, socioeconomic status (SES) impact, cytological diagnosis and other factors. I have also reviewed and examined a PhD from the University of Cape Town in South Africa titled Molecular characterization of Botswana female breast cancers.
Recently, he has been developing a portfolio and interest in Cardiovascular (CVS) Pathology Research and burnishing skills and competencies in CVS Pathology including Histopathological and Cytological Diagnosis. To this end he has developed publications and upcoming mansucripts.
An evolving interest and portfolio in Endocrine and Metabolic Pathology in particular Thyroid Pathology, Diabetes Mellitus and the Pathology of Trace Elements including their associations to Carcinogenesis is developing to which effect he has also got some publications.
