Historical Background
Association of Pathologists of Tanzania (APT) was formed in March, 1988; following the first meeting of the pathologists in East, Central and Southern Africa which was held in Harare, Zimbabwe, in 1987, organized by the Regional Commonwealth Health Secretariat based in Arusha. This Meeting resulted into the formation of the Regional Association of Pathologist called “Association of Pathologists of East, Central and Southern Africa (APECSA).
The formation of APECSA required the focal point of the regional body through national associations, and none existed at that time, in Tanzania. Therefore, Prof. James Kitinya worked on a draft constitution for the formation of the national association of pathologists in Tanzania. Hence, the Association of Pathologists of Tanzania (APT) was formed and launched in March, 1988, in Dar es Salaam, and its constitution was officially adopted. The emblem was developed and the Association was officially registered with the Registrar of Societies in 1989.
